Short answer

Chicco and Nuna seats meet the same federal standard (FMVSS 213), so pick on features: all four seats carry 4 to 30 pounds, Nuna's PIPA aire rx and PIPA rx carriers are lighter (6.2 and 7.6 pounds vs 9.5 and 10 for the KeyFit 30 and KeyFit Max), and the KeyFit Max fits to 32 inches, not 30. Chicco infant seats last 6 years; Nuna says check the label.

Key takeaways

  • Every infant car seat sold in the US has to meet the same federal standard, FMVSS 213, so neither brand is safer by name. Fit in your car and a correct install on every ride matter more [1][2].
  • All four seats take 4 to 30 pounds. Height splits them: 30 inches for the KeyFit 30, PIPA aire rx and PIPA rx, 32 for the KeyFit Max [3][4][7][8].
  • Carrier weight favors Nuna: 6.2 pounds for the PIPA aire rx and 7.6 for the PIPA rx, against 9.5 for the KeyFit 30 and 10 for the KeyFit Max. The bases go the other way: 8.5 pounds for the KeyFit Max base, 16.8 for the PIPA RELX base [3][4][7][8][11].
  • Chicco gives infant seats 6 years from manufacture. Nuna's PIPA manuals don't print a number and say to check the label on the carrier and base [5][6][9].
  • Recalls we found by October 16, 2026: one Chicco campaign since 2010 (a harness booster) and one Nuna campaign (the RAVA convertible). None names a KeyFit 30, KeyFit Max or PIPA [15][17].

Chicco and Nuna infant car seats meet the same federal crash standard, FMVSS 213 [1], so neither brand is safer by name. The seats are alike on paper: all four take 4 to 30 pounds. The differences are carrier weight, height limit, base weight and lifespan. Nuna's carriers are lighter. Chicco's KeyFit Max reaches 32 inches and has a lighter base.

We don't test car seats. Everything here comes from the makers' pages and manuals and NHTSA's recall data, read on October 16, 2026. Your seat's label and manual are the final word.

Weight and height limits

Every seat stops at 30 pounds. Height usually runs out first. The KeyFit 30, PIPA rx and PIPA aire rx stop at 30 inches. The KeyFit Max goes to 32 [3][4][7][8]. For a tall baby, the Max's 2 inches can mean more months in the carrier. Chicco's manual also requires the baby's head to sit at least 1 inch below the top of the headrest, and Nuna's manual says the same [5][9].

Here are all four as the makers publish them:

Carrier weight vs base weight

Nuna lists the PIPA aire rx at 6.2 pounds and the PIPA rx at 7.6, without canopy and inserts, which add about 1 to 2.2 pounds [7][8]. Chicco lists the KeyFit 30 at 9.5 pounds and the KeyFit Max at 10 [3][4]. That's up to 3.8 pounds heavier in your hand, for the PIPA aire rx against the KeyFit Max.

Bases reverse it. Chicco lists the KeyFit Max base at 8.5 pounds [4]. Nuna lists the PIPA RELX base at 16.8 pounds and the PIPA series base at 14 [10][11]. If the base stays in the car, you carry only the seat. If you move bases between cars often, Chicco's is easier to lift.

Bases and installing without one

Chicco's bases depend on the carrier. The KeyFit Max base holds every KeyFit, but the KeyFit and KeyFit 30 base won't hold a Max. Our Chicco guide has the full table. Nuna's answer is simpler: both the PIPA series base and the RELX base fit every PIPA series seat, and neither fits the PIPA urbn [10][11].

Both brands describe an install without the base for taxis and rideshares. Chicco says the KeyFit and KeyFit 30 install with a locking vehicle seat belt, and the KeyFit Max uses European belt routing [3][4][5]. Nuna's PIPA rx manual describes a carrier-only install in two ways [9]. Chicco's manuals say never to do it with a non-locking belt.

Chicco's KeyFit Max has an integrated anti-rebound bar [4]. Nuna lists a steel stability leg on the base and an anti-rebound panel on the PIPA rx and aire rx [7][8]. Chicco's KeyFit 30 page doesn't list a rebound feature, which doesn't mean it's unsafe, only that the maker doesn't publish one [3].

How long each seat lasts

Chicco's KeyFit 30 and KeyFit Max manuals say not to use the seat if it is more than 6 years old. Check the "Do Not Use After" label under the carrier [5][6]. Nuna's PIPA manuals print no number. They say to check the expiration label on the underside of the carrier or base [9]. Retailers often say 7 years for the PIPA, but we couldn't find that in Nuna's own manuals, so treat the label as the rule. The base has its own date.

Bigger seats: Fit360 vs RAVA next

When your baby outgrows the carrier, both brands make a rotating or standard convertible. Chicco's Fit360 rear-faces 4 to 40 pounds and up to 43 inches, and forward-faces 26.5 to 65 pounds [12]. Nuna's RAVA next rear-faces 5 to 50 pounds and 18 to 49 inches with the vehicle belt, and forward-faces 30 to 65 pounds [13]. Chicco lists rotating convertibles at 8 years [21]. Nuna's RAVA next manual says not to use the seat past 10 years [14].

The AAP says to keep a child rear-facing until they reach the top height or weight limit of their seat [2]. See our infant vs convertible comparison for when to switch.

Recalls we found

We searched NHTSA's child restraint recall data for both brands on October 16, 2026. Recalls can be added at any time, so look up your own model number and date at NHTSA's recall search [20].

  • Chicco: One campaign since 2010. 25C-005 (2025) covers the MyFit Zip Air harness and booster, not an infant seat [17]. A 2008 campaign (08C-007) replaced certain KeyFit and KeyFit 30 bases [18]. We found no recall naming the KeyFit Max.
  • Nuna: One campaign. 24C-002 (2024) covers the RAVA convertible, made July 16, 2016 to October 25, 2023, where debris can make the harness adjuster button fail. It covers 608,786 seats, and the fix is a free remedy kit [15][16]. SafetyBeltSafe's January 2026 list says no recalls, replacement parts or warnings for the PIPA, PIPA aire rx and PIPA rx [19].

Who each seat fits

  • KeyFit 30: A parent who wants a belt-only install and has an average-sized baby.
  • KeyFit Max: A parent with a tall baby, or who wants an anti-rebound bar and a light base.
  • PIPA aire rx or PIPA rx: A parent who carries the seat a lot, or rides in taxis and wants the lightest carrier.

Questions people ask

Is Chicco or Nuna safer?

Neither. Every infant car seat sold in the US has to meet the same federal standard, FMVSS 213. The AAP says the right seat is the one that fits your child and your car, is installed correctly and is used on every ride. The differences between these brands are features, weight and fit.

Which is lighter, a Chicco KeyFit or a Nuna PIPA?

The Nuna PIPA. Nuna lists the PIPA aire rx carrier at 6.2 pounds and the PIPA rx at 7.6, without canopy and inserts. Chicco lists the KeyFit 30 at 9.5 pounds and the KeyFit Max at 10. The bases reverse it: the KeyFit Max base is 8.5 pounds and the PIPA RELX base is 16.8.

How long is a Chicco infant car seat good for?

Chicco's infant seat manuals say not to use the seat if it is more than 6 years old. The date is on the underside of the carrier and on the base.

How long is a Nuna PIPA car seat good for?

Nuna's PIPA manuals don't print a number. They say to check the expiration label on the underside of the base or carrier. Retailers often say 7 years, but we couldn't find that in Nuna's own manuals, so follow the label.

Can I install a Chicco or Nuna infant seat without the base?

Yes, both makers describe it. Chicco says the KeyFit and KeyFit 30 install with the vehicle seat belt and no base, and the KeyFit Max uses European belt routing. Nuna's PIPA aire, PIPA aire rx and PIPA rx manuals describe a carrier-only install in two ways. Follow your manual exactly.

Can a Chicco KeyFit go on a Nuna base?

No. A carrier goes only on the bases its maker lists. Chicco's KeyFit carriers use Chicco KeyFit bases, and Nuna's PIPA carriers use the PIPA series or RELX bases. Never mix brands.
