Key takeaways
- Cybex and Nuna infant seats are sold in the US as seats that meet FMVSS 213, the same federal standard, so the choice is features and fit.
- Both brands use a 4-to-30-pound range. Cybex's Aton G2 allows up to 32 inches and Nuna's PIPA seats 30, so tall babies may outgrow a PIPA first.
- The PIPA aire rx carrier is 6.2 pounds and the PIPA rx 7.6, both without canopy and inserts. The Aton G2 is 9 pounds.
- The Aton G2 Swivel's base rotates 180 degrees. The PIPA seats don't swivel but have a stability leg and an anti-rebound panel.
- Joie's i-Level and i-Gemm are European i-Size seats. Under US rules a seat must be certified to FMVSS 213, so don't import one.

Cybex and Nuna infant seats sold in the US are certified to the same federal standard, FMVSS 213, so you aren't choosing between a safer and a less safe seat [1]. The AAP says the right seat fits your child and your car, is installed correctly and is used on every ride [2]. What changes is the feature set: a rotating base, a stability leg, a lighter carrier.
This page compares the Cybex Aton G2 Swivel with the Nuna PIPA rx and PIPA aire rx from the makers' own pages, then covers what Joie shoppers should know. For more infant seats, see our infant car seat guide.

The swivel vs the stability leg
The Aton G2 Swivel's base rotates 180 degrees, so you can turn the seat toward the open door to buckle your baby, then turn it back before you drive [3]. That helps in tight parking spots. The base combines an anti-rebound bar and a load leg [3]. Cybex designs it to stay in one car, and you must rotate it back to the driving position before the car moves [3].
The PIPA seats don't swivel. They use a steel stability leg on the base and an anti-rebound panel on the seat [4][5]. Nuna's PIPA rx manual also lets you install the seat with the vehicle belt and no base in two ways, and covers aircraft installation [6]. For which feature matters in your car, read both the car seat and vehicle manuals.
Weight, height and carrying
The weight range is the same, 4 to 30 pounds [3][4][5]. Height isn't. Cybex lists up to 32 inches for the Aton G2 and Nuna lists 16 to 30 inches for the PIPA seats [3][4][5]. A baby who grows tall will reach the PIPA's limit first.
On carrying, the PIPA aire rx is 6.2 pounds and the PIPA rx 7.6, both without canopy and inserts, which Nuna says add about 2.2 pounds and 1 pound [4][5]. The Aton G2 weighs 9 pounds [3]. Over a year of carrying a growing baby, those pounds add up.
How long each seat lasts
Cybex certifies the Aton G2 Swivel for 6 years from the date of manufacture, with the dates on a sticker under the seat [3]. Nuna's PIPA rx manual doesn't give a number. It sends you to the label on the base or carrier [6]. Check the label on yours, and see our guide to car seat expiration by brand.
Recalls we found
We searched NHTSA records on October 16, 2026. Recalls can be added at any time, so look up your seat's model number and manufacture date in NHTSA's recall search [13].
- Cybex: Campaign 25C-002 (2025) covered Aton G and Aton G Swivel seats made from February 20, 2023, through May 10, 2024, for harness anchor hooks that could bend [8]. Cybex's notice doesn't list the newer Aton G2.
- Nuna: NHTSA lists one Nuna recall, campaign 24C-002, covering RAVA convertible seats [9]. We found no recall naming the PIPA rx or PIPA aire rx.
What about the Cybex Cloud G?
Cybex's US page for the Cloud G Comfort Extend lists 4 to 35 pounds and 17 to 32 inches, and says the seat is no longer available [7]. If you're shopping now, the Aton G2 Swivel is the Cybex we could verify as current. If you own a Cloud G, its label and manual still apply.
Joie vs Nuna: what to know
"Joie vs Nuna" comes up a lot, but we couldn't verify a US version of the Joie seats people search for. The Joie i-Level and i-Gemm we found are i-Size seats that European retailers list in centimeters and kilograms, for example birth to 13 kg (about 28.7 pounds) and 40 to 85 cm (about 33.5 inches) [12]. That's the European standard, not FMVSS 213.
NHTSA's position is that every child restraint sold in or imported into the US must be certified to FMVSS 213, and the US doesn't follow the European approval system [10]. Nationwide Children's Hospital lists seats that meet another region's standard but not the US one as non-compliant for US use [11]. So we don't give Joie specs here. If you're offered a Joie seat, look for the FMVSS 213 statement and a US manual before you buy.
Who each seat fits
- Aton G2 Swivel: A parent who struggles to lean into the back seat, and wants a load leg and a base that stays in one car.
- PIPA rx: A parent who wants a stability leg and a light carrier and is buying or already owns a Nuna stroller.
- PIPA aire rx: A parent who carries the seat often and wants the lightest carrier of the three.
You can check the Aton G2 on Amazon: Check price on Amazon Affiliate link. Nuna sells the PIPA seats on its own site and through baby retailers.

Questions people ask
Is Cybex or Nuna safer?
Neither. Both brands' US seats must meet FMVSS 213, the same federal standard. The AAP says the right seat fits your child and your car, is installed correctly and is used on every ride. Swivel bases, load legs and stability legs are installation and convenience features, not a safety ranking.
Is the Nuna PIPA lighter than the Cybex Aton?
Yes. Nuna lists the PIPA aire rx carrier at 6.2 pounds and the PIPA rx at 7.6 pounds, both without canopy and inserts. Cybex lists the Aton G2 Swivel at 9 pounds. Add the canopy and inserts to the Nuna seats, which Nuna says is about 1 to 2.2 pounds.
How long is a Cybex infant car seat good for?
Cybex certifies its Aton G2 Swivel for 6 years from the date of manufacture. The manufacture and expiration dates are on a sticker under the seat.
Can I use a Joie car seat in the US?
Only a seat certified to FMVSS 213 is meant for use in the US, and NHTSA says every child restraint sold in or imported into the country must be certified to that standard. The Joie i-Level and i-Gemm we found are European i-Size seats listed in centimeters and kilograms. We couldn't find a US product page for them, so check any Joie seat for a US FMVSS 213 label first.
What happened to the Cybex Cloud G?
Cybex's US page for the Cloud G Comfort Extend says it's no longer available. It listed 4 to 35 pounds and 17 to 32 inches. If you have a Cloud G, the manual and label still apply.
Does a Nuna PIPA need a base?
No. Nuna says the PIPA rx and aire rx can be installed with the vehicle seat belt and no base, and that both are FAA certified for aircraft use. The Cybex Aton G2 can also be installed without its base using alternate belt guides.
