Key takeaways
- PIPA, PIPA aire, PIPA aire rx and PIPA rx are rated 4 to 30 pounds and 16 to 30 inches. Nuna says the PIPA rx suits a child until about 18 months [1][2][3].
- The PIPA series base and the PIPA RELX base both fit every PIPA series seat, any model year. Neither fits the PIPA urbn, which installs with no base [4][5][6].
- PIPA, PIPA aire and PIPA rx can be installed with the vehicle belt and no base, and Nuna certifies them for aircraft with or without the base [1][2][3][7].
- Nuna's PIPA manuals don't print a lifespan; they say to check the label under the base or seat. Its RAVA next and EXEC next manuals say not to use the seat past 10 years [14][15].
- NHTSA recall 24C-002 covers Nuna RAVA seats made July 16, 2016 to October 25, 2023, about 608,786 seats. We found no NHTSA recall for any PIPA [17][18][19].
If you own a Nuna PIPA, the numbers to know are 30 pounds and 30 inches. The PIPA aire, PIPA aire rx and PIPA rx are all rated 4 to 30 pounds and 16 to 30 inches, and Nuna says the PIPA rx suits a child until about 18 months [1][2][3]. Two bases fit them all.
We don't test car seats. This guide pulls limits, base fit and install options from Nuna's own product pages and user manuals, then checks NHTSA's recall data. For how Nuna compares with Cybex and Doona, see our Cybex vs Nuna and Nuna vs Doona comparisons.
Nuna PIPA weight and height limits
"Nuna PIPA" is a family. The seats below are the ones on Nuna's US infant car seat page, plus one discontinued model you may see secondhand.
| Seat | Weight | Height | Carrier weight* | Base | Installs with no base |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PIPA aire | 4 to 30 lb [2] | 16 to 30 in [2] | 6 lb [2] | PIPA series base, included | Yes [9] |
| PIPA aire rx | 4 to 30 lb [3] | 16 to 30 in [3] | 6.2 lb [3] | PIPA RELX base, included | Yes [3][8] |
| PIPA rx | 4 to 30 lb [1][7] | 16 to 30 in [1][7] | 7.6 lb [1] | PIPA RELX base, included | Yes [1][7] |
| PIPA urbn | 4 to 30 lb on the product page; 4 to 22 lb in the 2022 manual [4][10] | 16 to 29 in [4][10] | About 7 lb [4] | None needed | Baseless by design [4] |
| PIPA lite rx (discontinued) | 4 to 32 lb [11] | Under 32 in [11] | n/a | PIPA RELX base [11] | n/a |
*Carrier weight is without the canopy and inserts, which Nuna lists at about 1 to 2.2 pounds depending on the model [1][2][3].
Two notes on those numbers:
- The PIPA urbn limits don't agree. Nuna's product page says 4 to 30 pounds. The 2022 manual we found says 4 to 22 pounds and under 29 inches [4][10]. Follow the label on your seat and the manual that came with it.
- Padding comes out as your baby grows. The PIPA rx manual says the body support must come out once a snug fit is possible without it, at about 11 pounds. The shoulder and crotch pads can come out at 22 pounds [7].
Height tends to run out before weight, so check the head-room rule monthly. The manual says to keep the child's head at least 1 inch below the top of the child restraint [7]. When they outgrow the carrier, keep them rear-facing in a convertible. The AAP says to keep rear-facing until the seat's top height or weight limit [21], and many states set a minimum; see our state car seat laws.
Nuna infant car seat base: which base fits which PIPA?
Nuna's answer is simpler than Chicco's. Both PIPA bases fit every PIPA series seat, and neither fits the PIPA urbn.
| Base | Fits | Does not fit | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| PIPA series base | "All Nuna infant car seats from any model year": PIPA, PIPA rx, PIPA lite, PIPA lite R, PIPA lite LX, PIPA lite rx, PIPA aire rx and PIPA aire [5] | PIPA urbn [5] | 14 lb [5] |
| PIPA RELX base | All Nuna PIPA series infant car seats [6] | PIPA urbn [6] | 16.8 lb [6] |
What separates the two [5][6]:
- The RELX base has a 4-position adjustable rigid latch to remove or reduce the gap between the vehicle seat and base, a steel-reinforced True lock rigid latch with indicators that turn green when clicked in, and automatic latch storage.
- The PIPA series base has colored indicators on its stability leg and rigid lower attachments. It ships with the PIPA aire. The RELX base ships with the PIPA rx and aire rx [1][2][3].
If you bought a second base for another car, either works with any PIPA series carrier. The PIPA rx manual confirms the rx is compatible with the PIPA series base, sold separately [7].
The PIPA urbn works differently. It has no detachable base. Nuna builds steel-reinforced pipaFIX rigid lower anchors into the shell, and you can also install it with the vehicle belt, or both [4].
Nuna baseless install: PIPA, aire, rx and urbn
The PIPA aire, aire rx and rx manuals each describe a "Child Restraint Only Install" that works "without a base in 2 different ways" [7][8][9]. Nuna's product pages call this out for taxis and rideshares [1][3]. Install only in a forward-facing vehicle seat, with the baby facing the rear [9].
The PIPA urbn goes further. It skips the base entirely by design, so there's nothing to carry between cars [4].
Nuna certifies the PIPA rx for commercial aircraft with or without the base [7]. The urbn manual says the same for the urbn [10]. Contact the airline first, as the manuals say. The FAA says to look for the label "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft", and that car seats generally go in a window seat, not an exit row [20].
How long is a Nuna car seat good for? (expiration)
Nuna's PIPA manuals don't print a number. The PIPA rx, PIPA aire, PIPA aire rx and base manuals each tell you to check the label on the underside of the base or child restraint for expiration date information [7][8][9][12][13]. Read the label on your own seat. Retailers often say 7 years for the PIPA, but we couldn't find that in Nuna's own manuals, so treat the label as the rule.
Nuna's bigger seats do state a number. The RAVA next and EXEC next manuals both say not to use the child restraint if it is more than 10 years old [14][15]. See our car seat expiration guide for every brand side by side.
Expiration counts from the date of manufacture on the label, not the day you bought the seat. And the base has its own date, so a base bought separately may expire on a different day than your carrier [7][12].
Nuna RAVA and EXEC weight limits
Nuna's convertible and all-in-one seats cover far more than the infant PIPA. These are the manual limits for the "next" generation [14][15]:
| Seat | Rear-facing | Forward-facing (harness) | Booster |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAVA next | 5 to 50 lb, 18 to 49 in | 30 to 65 lb, 34 to 49 in | n/a |
| EXEC next | 5 to 50 lb, 18 to 49 in | 30 to 65 lb, 34 to 49 in | 40 to 110 lb, 43 to 57 in |
The RAVA next manual says to use the infant insert only for babies 5 to 11 pounds, and to keep the SIP insert in place up to 40 pounds [14]. Forward-facing starts at age 2 or older, once the rear-facing limit is outgrown [14][15].
Nuna car seat recalls
We searched NHTSA's recall data for child restraints (campaigns since 2010) on October 16, 2026 for Nuna and PIPA. This is what we found, not a promise there are no others [18].
| Campaign | Year | Seats | Issue | Units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24C-002 | 2024 | RAVA, made July 16, 2016 to October 25, 2023, with a plastic harness adjuster button | Debris may enter the front harness adjuster and make it fail, leaving a loose harness | 608,786 |
Nuna's fix is a free remedy kit. Owner letters were mailed starting February 14, 2025, and you can reach Nuna at 1-855-686-2891 or info.usa@nunababy.com [17]. Nuna's own recall page covers the same date range [16]. NHTSA's record lists the full set of RAVA model numbers, so check your seat's model number against it.
No PIPA campaign turned up in the NHTSA data. The January 25, 2026 SafetyBeltSafe list names Pipa, Pipa Aire RX, Pipa Lite, Pipa Lite R, Pipa Lite RX, Pipa RX and Pipa Urbn among Nuna models with "no recalls, replacement parts, or warnings", and lists the RAVA recall [19]. Register your seat with Nuna so it can reach you, as the manuals advise [7].
Nuna stroller adapters and travel systems
Nuna's manuals say to use the carrier only with Nuna strollers or appropriate Nuna adapters [7]. The details by seat:
- PIPA rx and other PIPA series seats. The rx manual says the carrier can attach to Nuna strollers, and to other brands of strollers, using adapters sold separately. The infant car seat ring adapter is listed as the accessory [7]. Nuna's product page says the rx is compatible with all Nuna strollers and their included adapters [1].
- PIPA urbn. The urbn manual says it attaches to Nuna TAVO series and TRVL strollers without adapters, and to other Nuna strollers with PIPA series ring or post adapters, sold separately [10]. Nuna's page lists the TRIV series, TRVL series, MIXX next and SWIV as pairings, and sells the urbn in travel-system bundles [4].
- Other brands. Nuna points to adapters for other stroller brands but doesn't list them on the seat pages we read [7]. Check the stroller maker's compatibility list before you buy.

Questions people ask
What is the Nuna PIPA weight limit?
30 pounds, with a height limit of 30 inches. That applies to the PIPA aire, PIPA aire rx and PIPA rx. The discontinued PIPA lite rx was rated to 32 pounds and under 32 inches [1][2][3][11].
Which base fits the Nuna PIPA?
Either the PIPA series base or the PIPA RELX base. Nuna says both fit all PIPA series infant seats from any model year, and neither connects to the PIPA urbn [4][5][6].
Can you use a Nuna PIPA without the base?
Yes, for the PIPA, PIPA aire, PIPA aire rx and PIPA rx. Nuna's manuals describe a 'child restraint only' install with the vehicle belt, in two ways. The PIPA urbn needs no base at all because its rigid lower anchors are built into the shell [4][7][8][9].
How long is a Nuna car seat good for?
Nuna's PIPA manuals say to check the expiration label on the underside of the seat or base, and don't print a number. Its RAVA next and EXEC next manuals say not to use the seat if it is more than 10 years old [7][14][15].
Does a Nuna car seat base expire?
Yes. Nuna's manuals say to check the label on the underside of the base or the seat for expiration date information [7][12][13].
Has Nuna recalled any car seats?
Yes, the RAVA convertible in 2024 (NHTSA 24C-002). We found no NHTSA recall for the PIPA family in recall data searched October 16, 2026, and the January 2026 SafetyBeltSafe list shows none [17][18][19].
