What a birth center is
A freestanding birth center is a home-like place to give birth outside a hospital, usually run by midwives, for people with low-risk pregnancies. If a problem comes up in labor, you transfer to a hospital.
Accreditation by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC) is voluntary. We mark the centers on its list.
