Short answer

Chicco and Graco infant seats meet the same federal crash standard (FMVSS 213) and all carry 4 to 30 pounds, so the difference is convenience: the Graco SnugRide Lite LX is the lightest carrier at 7.5 pounds with a 7-year lifespan, while the Chicco KeyFit 30 (9.5 pounds) and KeyFit Max (10) last 6 years. Chicco's KeyFit Max adds an anti-rebound bar, and Chicco documents a baseless install.

Key takeaways

  • Every infant seat sold in the US has to meet the same federal standard, FMVSS 213, so neither brand is safer by name. Fit in your car, correct installation and use on every ride matter more.
  • On paper the three seats share a 4-to-30-pound range. Height is where they split: 30 inches for the KeyFit 30, 32 for the KeyFit Max and the SnugRide Lite LX.
  • The SnugRide Lite LX is the lightest carrier at 7.5 pounds. The KeyFit 30 is 9.5 and the KeyFit Max is 10.
  • Chicco installs without the base using the seat belt. Graco's SnugRide Lite LX product page doesn't describe that, so check its manual before relying on it in rideshares.
  • Recalls we found by October 16, 2026: Graco's April 2026 recall (26C-003) covers the SnugRide Turn & Slide, a different seat. Chicco's NHTSA recalls are a 2008 base recall and a 2025 recall of the MyFit Zip Air.

Chicco and Graco infant seats meet the same federal crash standard, FMVSS 213, so you aren't choosing between a safer and a less safe seat [1]. You're choosing fit, features and convenience. The AAP says the right seat fits your child and your car, is installed correctly and is used on every ride [2].

This page compares the Chicco KeyFit 30, the Chicco KeyFit Max and the Graco SnugRide Lite LX using the makers' own published specs. If you're still choosing a type of seat, start with infant vs convertible seats. For a wider list, see our infant car seat guide.

The specs side by side

Each value below links to the maker's page.

Specs as each maker publishes them; each value links to its source. We don't test or rate products. Checked October 15, 2026. Some links are labeled partner or affiliate links: how they work.

Weight and height limits

All three seats take a newborn from 4 pounds and stop at 30 pounds [3][4][5]. Most babies hit the height limit or the head-room rule first. The KeyFit 30 stops at 30 inches, and the KeyFit Max and SnugRide Lite LX at 32 [3][4][5]. For a tall baby, those 2 inches can mean more time in the seat.

Graco also says the baby's head must sit at least 1 inch below the top of the shell, so the number on the label isn't the whole rule [5].

Carrier weight and carrying

The SnugRide Lite LX carrier weighs 7.5 pounds without its base, by Graco's spec list [5]. Chicco lists the KeyFit 30 carrier at 9.5 pounds and the KeyFit Max at 10 [3][4]. That's 2 to 2.5 pounds more before the baby goes in, and you'll carry it one-handed. The KeyFit Max base adds 8.5 pounds, so leave it in the car [4].

Installation: base, no base, rebound

All three install on a base with LATCH or the vehicle seat belt [3][4][5].

Chicco says the KeyFit and KeyFit 30 install without a base using the seat belt, which helps in a taxi or rideshare [3]. The KeyFit Max uses European belt routing for the same job [4]. Graco's SnugRide Lite LX page doesn't describe a baseless install, so check the manual before you try it [5].

Only the KeyFit Max lists an anti-rebound bar, which limits how far the seat rotates back toward the vehicle seat in a crash [4]. Chicco's KeyFit 30 page and Graco's SnugRide Lite LX page don't list a rebound or load-leg feature [3][5]. That doesn't mean a seat is unsafe. It means that feature isn't published.

How long each seat lasts

Chicco gives its infant seats 6 years from the date of manufacture [6]. Graco's SnugRide Lite LX page says to stop using it and throw it away 7 years after manufacture [5]. The date is on a label on the seat, and the base has its own. Our guide to car seat expiration by brand compares makers across seat types.

Strollers and travel systems

Seats click into their own brand's strollers. Chicco says the KeyFit 30 and KeyFit Max fit all Chicco strollers except the Liteway and Urbino [3][4]. Graco says its infant seats fit Graco strollers and bases, apart from its newer GoMax collection, which has its own compatibility chart [5]. If you want a set, see our travel system and stroller guides. Cross-brand use needs a maker-approved adapter.

Recalls we found

We searched NHTSA records for each brand on October 16, 2026. Recalls can be added at any time, so look up your own seat's model number and manufacture date in NHTSA's recall search [10].

  • Graco: Campaign 26C-003, filed April 3, 2026, covers 5,126 SnugRide Turn & Slide rotating infant seats, where the carrier can detach from the base in a crash [8]. It's a different model from the SnugRide Lite LX. We found no recall naming the SnugRide Lite LX.
  • Chicco: Campaign 25C-005 covers the MyFit Zip Air harness and booster seat, not the KeyFit [9]. A 2008 campaign (08C-007) replaced certain KeyFit and KeyFit 30 bases made in a narrow window that year [11]. We found no recall naming the KeyFit Max.

If you're buying a used seat, check the label against these campaigns.

Who each seat fits

  • KeyFit 30: A parent who wants to install with the seat belt and no base, and whose baby is average-sized.
  • KeyFit Max: A parent with a tall baby, or one who wants an anti-rebound bar, and doesn't mind a 10-pound carrier.
  • SnugRide Lite LX: A parent who wants the lightest carrier of the three, or who already owns a Graco stroller.

Questions people ask

Is Chicco or Graco safer?

Neither. Every infant car seat sold in the US has to meet the same federal standard, FMVSS 213. The AAP says the right seat is the one that fits your child and your car, is installed correctly and is used on every ride. Differences between these brands are features and fit, not a safety ranking.

How long is a Graco car seat good for?

Graco's SnugRide Lite LX product page says to stop using it and throw it away 7 years after the date of manufacture. Graco's other seats run 7 or 10 years depending on the model, so check the label on yours. See our guide to car seat expiration by brand.

How long is a Chicco infant car seat good for?

Chicco gives its infant seats, including the KeyFit line, 6 years from the date of manufacture. The date is printed on the underside of the seat and on the base, so check both.

Can I use a Chicco KeyFit in a Graco stroller?

Not directly. Graco says its infant seats are compatible with Graco strollers, and Chicco says the KeyFit clicks into Chicco strollers. A seat from one brand in the other brand's stroller needs an adapter that the stroller maker approves, so check both compatibility lists first.

Which is easier to carry, a KeyFit or a SnugRide?

The SnugRide Lite LX, by Graco's published numbers. Graco lists the carrier at 7.5 pounds, Chicco lists the KeyFit 30 at 9.5 and the KeyFit Max at 10. Add the baby, and every pound counts.

Can I install a Chicco KeyFit without the base?

Yes. Chicco says the KeyFit and KeyFit 30 can be installed with the vehicle seat belt and no base, and the KeyFit Max uses European belt routing for the same purpose. Follow the manual's steps exactly, and have a certified technician check your install.
