Key takeaways
- Safety 1st sets the lifespan by model. Its onBoard FLX and onBoard Insta-LATCH DLX infant seats are 8 years. Grow and Go, TriFit, Turn and Go 360, Comfort Ride and the Grow and Go booster are 10 [2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
- Count from the date of manufacture on the seat's label, not the purchase date. Safety 1st says to check your manual for the lifespan of your seat [1].
- Limits run 4 to 30 pounds for the onBoard infant seats. The all-in-ones go 5 to 40 pounds rear-facing, 30 to 65 pounds forward-facing and 40 to 100 pounds as a booster [9][11][12][13].
- NHTSA records show six Safety 1st recall campaigns since 2010, most recently the Grow and Go Sprint headrest foam in 2025. Check your model number and date on NHTSA's recall search [17][18][24].
- Safety 1st, Maxi-Cosi and Cosco seats all come from Dorel Juvenile, so their expiration rules and manual wording are very similar [16].
Safety 1st car seats are good for 8 to 10 years from the day they were made, and the number depends on the model. In the user guides we read, the onBoard infant seats are 8 years. The Grow and Go, TriFit, Turn and Go 360, Comfort Ride and booster seats are 10 [2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
We don't test car seats. Everything here comes from Safety 1st's own pages and user guides, read on October 16, 2026, plus NHTSA's recall records. If your seat's label or manual says something different, follow the seat.
How long is a Safety 1st car seat good for?
Safety 1st's own expiration page says dates range from eight to twelve years depending on the product. It tells you to find the date-of-manufacture sticker and look in your manual for your seat's lifespan [1]. None of the Safety 1st guides we read went past 10 years.
The rule is the same everywhere: the clock starts on the manufacture date, not when you bought or unboxed the seat. Each guide says "do not use this car seat more than" 8 or 10 years "after the date of manufacture" [2][4].
| Seat | Type | Expires after |
|---|---|---|
| onBoard FLX | Infant | 8 years [2] |
| onBoard Insta-LATCH DLX | Infant | 8 years [3] |
| Grow and Go | All-in-one | 10 years [4] |
| TriFit | All-in-one | 10 years [5] |
| Turn and Go 360 and 360 DLX | Rotating all-in-one | 10 years [6] |
| Comfort Ride 3-in-1 | Harness booster | 10 years [7] |
| Grow and Go 2-in-1 | Belt-positioning booster | 10 years [8] |

Safety 1st car seat weight and height limits
These are the limits on Safety 1st's product pages. Your seat's label and manual are the final word, and the maker notes that not every child will fit comfortably across the full range.
| Seat | Rear-facing | Forward-facing (harness) | Booster |
|---|---|---|---|
| onBoard FLX [9] | 4 to 30 lb, up to 32 in | n/a | n/a |
| onBoard Insta-LATCH DLX [10] | 4 to 30 lb, under 32 in | n/a | n/a |
| Grow and Go [11] | 5 to 40 lb, 19 to 40 in | 30 to 65 lb, 34.4 to 49 in | 40 to 100 lb (belt-positioning) |
| TriFit [12] | 5 to 40 lb, 19 to 40 in | 30 to 65 lb, 34.4 to 49 in | 40 to 100 lb, 43.4 to 52 in |
| Turn and Go 360 [13] | 5 to 40 lb, 19 to 40 in | 30 to 65 lb, 34.4 to 49 in | 40 to 100 lb, 43.4 to 52 in |
| Comfort Ride 3-in-1 [14] | n/a | 30 to 65 lb, 34.4 to 49 in | 40 to 100 lb, 43.4 to 57 in |
| Grow and Go 2-in-1 [15] | n/a | n/a | 40 to 100 lb, 43.4 to 57 in |
A few things to know:
- The onBoard FLX weighs under 8 pounds, per Safety 1st [9]. It's rear-facing only, so your child will move to a convertible or all-in-one once they reach 30 pounds or 32 inches.
- The Turn and Go 360 rotates in all three modes, from baby to booster [13]. The TriFit and Grow and Go don't rotate.
- The all-in-ones cover the same ranges, so the choice between them is about features and fit in your car. Our convertible car seat guide and infant car seat guide compare options across brands.
Here is the Grow and Go with the specs Safety 1st lists on its product page:
| Model | Rear-facing | Forward-facing | Booster | Seat weight | Width | Expiration | Where to buy |

Where is the expiration date on a Safety 1st car seat?
Look for the date-of-manufacture label, which also carries the model number. Where it sits depends on the seat:
- Side of the seat: onBoard FLX, onBoard Insta-LATCH DLX, Grow and Go and TriFit [2][3][4][5].
- Bottom of the seat: Turn and Go 360 and Comfort Ride [6][7].
Safety 1st says many of its seats also have a sticker on the back with the manufacture date [1]. To get the expiration, add the lifespan from your manual to that date. A Grow and Go made on March 15, 2024 expires March 15, 2034.
Can't find a label? Without the date and model number you can't check for recalls or know the seat's age. Replace it.
Safety 1st car seat recalls (and the "Safety One" question)
The brand is Safety 1st, but plenty of parents search "safety one car seat recall" or "safety first car seat recall." They mean the same company. Safety 1st, Maxi-Cosi and Cosco are all Dorel Juvenile brands [16], and recalls on these seats are filed under Dorel Juvenile Group, so that's the name to look for on NHTSA's site.
We searched NHTSA's recall records on October 16, 2026 and found six campaigns that name Safety 1st seats since 2010. This is the list we found, not a promise there are no others. Check your own model on NHTSA's recall search [24].
| Campaign | Year | Safety 1st seats | Issue | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25C-006 [18] | 2025 | Grow & Go Sprint, models CC321GYU, CC321GYUD, CC321GYY, CC321GYYD, CC321HAO, CC321HAR | Headrest foam pad not secured, choking hazard | Free replacement headrest pad kit |
| 25C-004 [17] | 2025 | Comfort Ride 3-in-1, Boost & Go 3-in-1, Boost & Go Essential 3-in-1, MagicSquad 3-in-1 | Forward-facing label gave the wrong height range | Free new label |
| 23C-002 [19] | 2023 | onBoard 35 Secure Tech and Secure Tech Infant Base (Maxi-Cosi seats also covered) | Lower anchors on the base can fail, so the seat can detach | Free replacement base; use the vehicle belt until then |
| 12C-002 [20] | 2012 | onBoard 35 (IC124FSM) and Comfy Carry (IC123FSM) made May 2011 to April 2012 | Sold without the base that has the LATCH assembly | Free base with LATCH |
| 11C-001 [21] | 2011 | Dorel infant, convertible and booster seats, including onBoard, Alpha Omega, Alpha Omega Elite, Enspira, Priori, Prospect and Vantage | Harness adjuster button can stay unlocked, loosening the harness | Free lubricant kit and label |
| 11C-002 [22] | 2011 | Complete Air LX, Complete Air SE, Alpha Omega Elite made July 2010 to May 2011 | Label wording on installation | Free label kit |
None of these campaigns names the onBoard FLX, Grow and Go, TriFit or Turn and Go 360 shown in the tables above. The 2025 headrest recall covers the separate Grow & Go Sprint, so if you have a Sprint, check its model number against the list [18]. Dorel's recall line for these campaigns was 1-877-657-9546 [17][18][19].
Register your seat
Registering is how Dorel reaches you about a recall. The manuals say child restraints can be recalled for safety reasons and that you must register to be notified. Mail the card that came with the seat, call 1-800-544-1108, or register online at djgusa.com/registration/carseat/us [2][4]. You can also call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 [24].

When to replace a Safety 1st seat before it expires
An expiration date is the latest you can use a seat, not a promise it's fine until then.
- After a crash. Dorel Juvenile Group strongly recommends replacing the seat even after a minor crash, even if it was empty. A seat may not need replacing if the crash meets all five of NHTSA's minor-crash conditions: you could drive the vehicle away, the door nearest the seat wasn't damaged, no one was hurt, the air bags didn't deploy, and the seat has no visible damage [2][4][23]. After a moderate or severe crash, always replace it [23].
- If it's missing labels, parts or the manual. Without them you can't confirm the seat's age or limits.
- If it has an open recall you haven't fixed. The remedies above are free.
Safety 1st vs other brands
Safety 1st is one of three Dorel Juvenile car seat brands in the US, alongside Maxi-Cosi and Cosco [16]. If you're comparing across makers, our guides to Graco and Evenflo list the same data: lifespan, limits and recalls.
Check what your state requires at each stage on our car seat laws page. If a new seat is a stretch, see how to get a free car seat through Medicaid plans, Safe Kids coalitions and local programs.

Where is the expiration date on a Safety 1st car seat?
On a date-of-manufacture label on the side of the seat (onBoard, Grow and Go, TriFit) or the bottom (Turn and Go 360, Comfort Ride). Add the years from your manual to that date. Safety 1st says many of its seats also carry a sticker on the back [1][2][4][5][6][7].

Several, on specific models and dates. NHTSA lists six campaigns since 2010, including the 2025 Comfort Ride and Boost and Go label recall and the 2025 Grow and Go Sprint headrest foam recall. Look up your model number and manufacture date [17][18][24].
Is there a Safety One car seat recall?

It depends on the seat. The onBoard FLX takes babies 4 to 30 pounds and up to 32 inches. The Grow and Go, TriFit and Turn and Go 360 go 5 to 40 pounds rear-facing, 30 to 65 forward-facing and 40 to 100 as a booster [9][11][12][13].
Should I replace a Safety 1st seat after a minor crash?
