Key takeaways
- Every car seat sold in the US has to meet the same federal standard, FMVSS 213, so neither brand is safer by name. Fit in your car and a correct install on every ride matter more [1][2].
- Infant seats are close. The KeyFit 30, KeyFit Max, Willow S and Cypress all take 4 to 30 pounds. Height splits them: 30 inches for the KeyFit 30, 32 for the KeyFit Max and Cypress, under 32 for the Willow S [3][4][5][6].
- Both brands' infant seats last 6 years from the date of manufacture. Britax's Poplar S and Galaxy360 Slim last 10 and Chicco's rotating convertibles 8 [7][8][10][11].
- In convertibles, Britax rear-faces to 50 pounds, Chicco's Fit360 to 40 pounds and 43 inches [9][10][11].
- Recalls we found by October 16, 2026: one Chicco campaign since 2010 (the MyFit Zip Air harness booster) and eight Britax campaigns, newest the August 2026 B-Safe carry handle recall [15][17][18].

Chicco and Britax car seats meet the same federal crash standard, FMVSS 213 [1], so neither brand is safer by name. In infant seats they're close: both take 4 to 30 pounds and both last 6 years. The split comes in convertibles, where Britax rear-faces to 50 pounds and lasts 10 years, and Chicco's Fit360 rear-faces to 40 pounds, 43 inches.
We don't test car seats. Everything here comes from the makers' pages and manuals and NHTSA's recall data, read on October 16, 2026. Your seat's label and manual are the final word.

Infant seats: KeyFit vs Willow and Cypress
All four seats take a baby from 4 to 30 pounds [3][4][5][6]. Height is where they split. Chicco lists the KeyFit 30 at up to 30 inches and the KeyFit Max at up to 32 [3][4]. Britax lists the Willow S at under 32 inches and the Cypress at 17 to 32 [5][6]. Most babies hit the height limit first, so the KeyFit 30 is the one most likely to run out early.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Carrier weight
Chicco lists the KeyFit 30 carrier at 9.5 pounds and the KeyFit Max at 10 [3][4]. Britax lists the Cypress at 9.7 pounds, and its base at 10.2 [5]. Britax's Willow S page doesn't list a carrier weight [6]. These are within half a pound, so weight alone doesn't separate them.
Install and rebound
Both makers use a base with LATCH or the vehicle belt. Britax's ClickTight is a three-step belt install: open the panel, thread and buckle the belt, close it [13]. Chicco says the KeyFit and KeyFit 30 install with the seat belt and no base, and the KeyFit Max uses European belt routing for the same job [3][4]. Britax says the Willow, Willow S, Willow SC and Cypress can be installed without a base using a lap-shoulder or lap-only belt [12].
On crash movement, Chicco lists an anti-rebound bar on the KeyFit Max [4]. Britax lists a ReboundReduce carry handle on the Willow S and Cypress, which it says helps minimize movement in a crash [5][6]. These are different features, and neither maker publishes a rebound test result we could compare.
Bases and lifespan
Chicco's bases are specific to the carrier: the KeyFit Max base holds the whole KeyFit line, while the KeyFit and KeyFit 30 base won't hold a Max. Our Chicco guide has the full table. Britax pairs its infant seats with the Aspen and Alpine ClickTight bases, and the Arbor uses its own StayTight base [7].
Both brands give infant seats 6 years from manufacture [7][14]. Britax says the date is on the underside of the seat next to the harness slots [7]. Our car seat expiration guide compares 11 brands.
Convertibles: Fit360 vs Galaxy360 Slim and Poplar S
| Seat | Rear-facing | Forward-facing (harness) | Seat weight | Width | Expires after |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chicco Fit360 ClearTex [9] | 4 to 40 lb, up to 43 in | 26.5 to 65 lb, up to 49 in | 33.8 lb | 18.25 in | 8 years [8] |
| Britax Galaxy360 Slim [10] | 5 to 50 lb, 18 to 49 in | 30 to 65 lb, 35 to 49 in | Not listed | 17 in | 10 years |
| Britax Poplar S [11] | 5 to 50 lb, 18 to 49 in | 30 to 65 lb, 35 to 49 in | 28 lb | 17 in | 10 years |
The Fit360 and Galaxy360 Slim both rotate 360 degrees for loading. Chicco's Fit360 has a LeverLock belt system and six recline positions [9]. Britax's Galaxy360 Slim uses ClickTight and adds a ReboundReduce stability panel in rear-facing mode [10]. The Poplar S doesn't rotate and weighs 5 pounds less than the Fit360 [11].
The AAP says to keep a child rear-facing until they reach the top height or weight limit of their seat [2]. The Britax seats give you 10 more pounds. The Fit360's 43-inch rear-facing height is a point in its favor for tall toddlers, though Britax lists 49 inches.
Here's the Poplar S as Britax publishes it:
| Model | Rear-facing | Forward-facing | Booster | Seat weight | Width | Expiration | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Britax Poplar SConvertible (harness only) | 5–50 lb, 18–49 in | 30–65 lb, 35–49 in | None | 28 lb | 17 in | 10 years | Check on AmazonAffiliate link |

Recalls we found
We searched NHTSA's child restraint recall data for both brands on October 16, 2026. Recalls can be added at any time, so look up your own seat's model number and date at NHTSA's recall search [17].
Chicco has one campaign since 2010: 25C-005 (2025), the MyFit Zip Air harness and booster, where the seat may allow excessive chest movement in a crash. It isn't an infant seat or a convertible [18]. A 2008 campaign (08C-007) replaced certain KeyFit and KeyFit 30 bases [19]. SafetyBeltSafe's January 2026 list says no recalls, replacement parts or warnings for the KeyFit, KeyFit 30, KeyFit Max and Fit2 [20].
Britax has eight campaigns since 2010:
- 26C006 (August 2026): about 114,660 B-Safe Gen 2, B-Safe 35 and Endeavours infant seats built August 2020 to May 2023. A screw in the carry handle hub can loosen, and the handle can partly detach [15].
- 24C-001 (2024): certain One4Life and One4Life Slim seats, with a label that listed the wrong rear-facing lower anchor limit. The correct limit is 35 pounds [16].
- Six older campaigns from 2010 to 2017 covered chest clips, harness adjusters, carry handles on the B-Safe 35 and Chaperone, and the Boulevard, Marathon and Advocate convertibles [17].
We found no campaign naming the Willow S, Cypress, Poplar S or Galaxy360 Slim. Our Britax guide lists each Britax campaign with its fix, and the NHTSA lists are on our Britax recalls page. Our Chicco guide covers the Chicco campaign.

Questions people ask
Is Chicco or Britax safer?
Neither. Every infant and convertible seat sold in the US has to meet the same federal standard, FMVSS 213. The AAP says the right seat is the one that fits your child and your car, is installed correctly and is used on every ride. The differences between these brands are features, weight and fit.
How long is a Chicco car seat good for?
Chicco's infant seat manuals, including the KeyFit 30 and KeyFit Max, say not to use the seat if it is more than 6 years old. Chicco lists its rotating convertibles at 8 years. The date is on the underside of the seat and on the base.
How long is a Britax car seat good for?
Britax counts from the date of manufacture. Its Willow, Willow S, Willow SC, Cypress and Arbor infant seats are 6 years. The Poplar, Poplar S, Galaxy360 and One4Life are 10, and Grow With You is 9.
What does ClickTight do?
ClickTight is Britax's self-tensioning belt install. You open a panel, thread and buckle the vehicle belt, then close the panel, and Britax says the seat tensions the belt for you. Chicco's Fit360 uses a similar idea with its LeverLock system.
Can I install a Chicco or Britax infant seat without the base?
Yes, both makers describe it. Chicco says the KeyFit and KeyFit 30 install with the vehicle seat belt and no base, and the KeyFit Max uses European belt routing. Britax says the Willow, Willow S, Willow SC and Cypress can be installed without a base using a lap-shoulder or lap-only belt. Follow the manual exactly.
Which rear-faces longer, Chicco or Britax?
Britax's Galaxy360 Slim and Poplar S rear-face to 50 pounds. Chicco's Fit360 rear-faces to 40 pounds and 43 inches. The AAP says to keep a child rear-facing until they reach the top height or weight limit of their seat.
