Key takeaways
- Soft structured carriers sold in the US must meet the federal standard at 16 CFR 1226 (ASTM F2236), and slings and wraps must meet 16 CFR 1228 (ASTM F2907).
- Several carriers here take a newborn from 7 pounds with no insert: the Ergobaby Omni Deluxe, BabyBjörn Harmony, LÍLLÉbaby Complete and Tula Original.
- CPSC found 14 infant suffocation deaths in sling-style carriers over 20 years. Babies under 4 months, preemies, low-birthweight babies and babies with colds need extra care, and their face must stay visible.
- Wearer fit varies a lot. The LÍLLÉbaby Complete waist belt reaches 52 inches (61.5 with an extender), Tula lists petite to 4XL, and Solly lists XXS to XXL+.
- Of the brands we checked, CPSC records show no recall for any model on this list as of October 15, 2026.
The short answer: pick by your baby's age and your body, not by brand. For one carrier from newborn to toddler with no insert, the Ergobaby Omni Deluxe (7 to 45 lb) [9] and the mesh BabyBjörn Harmony (7 to 40 lb) [10] cover every carry position. For the newborn months alone, a stretchy wrap like the Moby Classic [15] or Solly Wrap [16] is simpler and lighter. If you wear a larger size, start with the waist range: the LÍLLÉbaby Complete belt reaches 52 inches [11].
Every pick below is chosen from makers' published specs, the federal carrier rules and CPSC recall records. We didn't wear or test any of them, and they're grouped by use, not ranked.

What the safety rules cover, and what to check yourself
Every soft structured carrier sold in the US must meet a mandatory federal rule, 16 CFR 1226, which adopts the ASTM F2236 standard [1]. Slings and wraps fall under a separate rule, 16 CFR 1228, which adopts ASTM F2907 and covers products for children from full-term birth to 35 pounds, though makers may set a higher limit [2]. Makers must also put a registration card in the box so they can reach you about a recall [2]. Fill it in.
The rules cover the product. Safe use is up to the wearer. CPSC has identified 14 infant suffocation deaths in sling-style carriers over 20 years [3]. Its safety experts say parents of babies younger than 4 months, premature and low-birthweight babies, and babies with colds or breathing problems should take extra care with slings, including asking their pediatrician [3].
Suffocation can happen two ways, CPSC says: the baby's face presses into fabric or the parent's body, or the baby curls chin-to-chest, which can block the airway [3]. It can happen within minutes [3].
The AAP adds that babies born prematurely or with respiratory problems shouldn't ride in backpacks or other upright devices, and that you should check your baby often in any carrier, keeping the nose and mouth clear [4].
UK health services teach the same checks as T.I.C.K.S. [6]:
- Tight: snug enough that the baby can't slump.
- In view: you see the face with a glance down, without opening fabric.
- Close enough to kiss: the top of the head sits near your chin.
- Keep chin off chest: the chin never pressed down, so the airway stays open.
- Supported back: chest and back held snugly, with no slumping or sliding down.
Hips. The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) recommends wide-base carriers that support the thighs to the knees, especially before 6 months. A 2023 study it cites found hips sat more fully in the socket in wide-base carriers than in narrow-base ones [5]. Several picks below carry the IHDI acknowledgment, and we note which.
Recalls. We searched CPSC recall records for every brand here on October 15, 2026 [7]. None of the models on this list has a recall. Older recalls for other products from some of these brands are noted with each pick, so you can check a hand-me-down.

One carrier from newborn to toddler
Ergobaby Omni Deluxe
The Omni Deluxe carries a child from 7 to 45 pounds, roughly birth to 4 years, in every position: facing in from birth, facing out from 5 months, and back and hip carries from 6 months [9]. Ergobaby's FAQ on the page says the Omni design takes a newborn from 7 pounds without an infant insert; you set the seat with color-coded tabs by your baby's height [9]. Straps can cross for front carries, and the page lists six storage spots [9].
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for this model as of October 15, 2026. Ergobaby's only CPSC recall is a 2021 stroller recall [7].
- Not for: parents who want a published waist range before buying. Ergobaby's page doesn't list one, though it sells a waistbelt extender separately [9].

BabyBjörn Harmony in 3D Mesh (also for hot weather)
The Harmony fits babies 7 to 40 pounds and 21 to 39 inches tall, from birth to about age 3, with four carrying positions, including facing out and back carry [10]. It needs no insert for newborns from 7 pounds [10]. BabyBjörn says it adjusts to fit most wearers from XS to XXL, and the IHDI acknowledges it as hip healthy [10]. The 3D mesh version is the one to look at if you live somewhere hot.
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for this model as of October 15, 2026. The only BabyBjörn carrier action in CPSC records is a 1999 repair program for an older model [7].
- Not for: wearers who need a waist measurement in inches; BabyBjörn gives sizes, not numbers [10]. It also stops at 40 pounds, 5 short of the Ergobaby and LÍLLÉbaby.

For plus-size or petite parents
LÍLLÉbaby Complete All Seasons (plus-size)
The Complete All Seasons carries children 7 to 45 pounds with no infant insert required [11]. LÍLLÉbaby says the waistband extends to 52 inches, a women's size 22/24, and extenders sold separately add 9.5 inches, to 61.5 inches [11]. That's the most specific wearer range on this list.
It lists six positions, including a newborn fetal carry, facing in, facing out from 6 months, hip and back carries, and the maker says the IHDI rates it hip-healthy [11]. A zip-down front panel exposes mesh when it's warm, and the shoulders and waist belt have dense padding [11].
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for LÍLLÉbaby as of October 15, 2026 [7].
- Not for: parents who want the lightest pack-down carrier. The padding and lumbar support add bulk compared with a mesh carrier or a wrap.

Tula Original in Mesh (petite, or a simpler carrier)
The Original, formerly called the Free-to-Grow, carries babies 7 to 45 pounds, newborn ready with no insert [12]. Tula says it fits wearers from petite to 4XL, and the mesh version is 100% polyester [12]. The seat adjusts in three widths as your baby grows [12].
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for Tula as of October 15, 2026 [7].
- Not for: families who want to face the baby out. Tula says the Original isn't designed for outward facing; it has two positions, facing in and back carry [12].

On a budget
Infantino Flip 4-in-1 Convertible
The Flip is rated for babies 8 to 32 pounds, with four positions: facing in with a narrow or wide seat, facing out and back carry [13]. Infantino says the facing-in seat supports an M-shape hip position [13]. Compare current prices at checkout; we don't list them.
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for the Flip 4-in-1 as of October 15, 2026. In 2020, Infantino recalled four lot codes of three different carriers, including the Flip Front2back, for a fall hazard [8]. If you're handed a used Infantino carrier, read the model name and lot code on the sewn-in label.
- Not for: heavier toddlers (the limit is 32 pounds [13]) or parents who want published wearer sizing. Infantino doesn't list waist range or fabric on the page.

Wraps and slings for the newborn months
Moby Classic Wrap
The Moby is a long piece of 100% cotton with some stretch, rated 8 to 33 pounds, one size fits all, with inward, front and hip positions [15]. A wrap holds a newborn close against your chest. It takes practice to tie, so learn it before the baby arrives.
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for Moby as of October 15, 2026 [7].
- Not for: quick in-and-out errands, or hot climates; a full cotton wrap is warm.
Check it on Amazon Affiliate link. Also sold at Target and directly by Moby.
Solly Baby Wrap
Solly's wrap is lighter, made of 100% TENCEL Modal, and rated 8 to 25 pounds, which the maker describes as the first six months or so [16]. Solly says it fits wearers XXS to XXL+, is about 5.5 yards long, and is certified hip-healthy by the IHDI [16].
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for Solly Baby as of October 15, 2026 [7].
- Not for: anyone looking past the baby's first half-year. At 25 pounds, its limit is the lowest on this list [16].
Check it on Amazon Affiliate link. Also sold directly by Solly Baby.
Boba Linen Ring Sling
A ring sling is one panel of fabric threaded through two rings, worn over one shoulder. Boba's is a linen and bamboo viscose blend rated 8 to 35 pounds [17]. It's quick to put on for short carries and hip carries with an older baby.
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for Boba as of October 15, 2026 [7].
- Not for: long walks, since all the weight sits on one shoulder, or for anyone unsure about newborn positioning. Ring slings are where CPSC's suffocation warnings apply most directly; CPSC says to keep the baby's face at or above the rim of the fabric, visible and clear of your body [3].

For toddlers and preschoolers
Beco Toddler Carrier, Cool Mesh
This is a larger carrier built for children 18 months and older, from 20 to 60 pounds [14]. Beco lists a front carry facing in and a back carry, adult fit XS to XXL, a moisture-wicking microfiber body with a 3D mesh panel, and says all Beco carriers are certified "Hip-Friendly" by the IHDI [14].
- Recall status: No CPSC recall found for this model as of October 15, 2026. Beco recalled its Butterfly infant carrier in 2008 [7].
- Not for: babies. It starts at 20 pounds and 18 months, so it's a second carrier, not a first one [14].

How to choose, in four questions
- How old will your baby be when you start? For newborns, check the minimum weight (7 or 8 pounds for these picks) and whether an insert is needed [9][10][11][12].
- How big are you and anyone else who'll wear it? Look for a published waist range or size range, and whether an extender exists [11][12][16].
- Where do you live? Mesh panels breathe better in heat; a cotton wrap is warm [10][15].
- How long will you use it? Limits run from 25 pounds for a newborn wrap to 60 for a toddler carrier [14][16].
A carrier often goes on a registry, so it's on our baby registry checklist. For what to pack when you head out wearing the baby, see the diaper bag checklist. For the rest of the early-weeks gear, see the newborn checklist. If you plan to nurse in a carrier and latch is a struggle, a lactation consultant can help with positioning. The AAP's tip still applies: check on your baby often [4].

Questions people ask
What is the best baby carrier for a newborn?
For the first months, a stretchy wrap such as the Moby Classic (from 8 lb) or Solly Wrap (8 to 25 lb) holds a newborn snugly. If you want one carrier that lasts into toddlerhood, the Ergobaby Omni Deluxe, BabyBjörn Harmony, LÍLLÉbaby Complete and Tula Original all start at 7 lb with no insert.
When can a baby face out in a carrier?
Follow the maker's minimum. Ergobaby lists facing out from 5 months, and LÍLLÉbaby says to wait until 6 months and strong head control. Some carriers, like the Tula Original, don't allow facing out at all.
Are baby carriers safe for babies under 4 months?
Yes, with care. CPSC says infants under 4 months, premature and low-birthweight babies, and babies with colds should get extra care in slings, including asking their pediatrician. Keep the face visible, the chin off the chest and the nose and mouth clear of fabric.
Which baby carrier fits plus-size parents?
Check the waist range before buying. LÍLLÉbaby says its Complete belt extends to 52 inches, and 61.5 inches with extenders sold separately. Tula lists petite to 4XL, and Solly's wrap lists XXS to XXL+.
Which carrier works for a toddler?
Toddler carriers have bigger seats and higher limits. The Beco Toddler carrier is made for children 18 months and older, from 20 to 60 lb. Standard carriers like the Omni Deluxe and LÍLLÉbaby Complete go to 45 lb.
