- The BabyBjörn Harmony is rated by BabyBjörn for 7 to 40 lb and 21 to 39 inches. The Ergobaby Omni Deluxe is rated by Ergobaby for 7 to 45 lb, up to age 4.
- Both carry facing in from 7 lb with no insert. The Omni Deluxe adds a hip carry, listed from about 6 months when baby sits unassisted.
- Every soft structured carrier sold in the U.S. must meet 16 CFR 1226, which adopts ASTM F2236. Slings and wraps fall under 16 CFR 1228.
- The International Hip Dysplasia Institute lists both brands as industry partners but says it doesn't certify or endorse products and that no carrier can cause or prevent hip dysplasia. It advises wide-base carriers for babies under 6 months.
- We found no CPSC carrier recall for either brand. Ergobaby had a 2021 recall of its METROUS strollers, which isn't a carrier.

BabyBjörn and Ergobaby are the two names most parents hear first when they shop for a soft carrier. If you're weighing BabyBjörn vs Ergobaby, the practical differences are weight range, which positions you get, and how each brand describes newborn fit. The two models we compared are the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Harmony and the Ergobaby Omni Deluxe, which are each brand's flagship soft carriers.
This page lines them up from the makers' own pages, the federal rule, the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) and the AAP. We research products; we don't test them, and we don't list prices. Our best baby carriers guide covers more brands.

How do the positions and weight limits compare?
The Omni Deluxe covers a wider range. Ergobaby lists 7 to 45 lb for the baby, which it ties to roughly birth to 4 years, and four positions [7]. The Harmony covers 7 to 40 lb and 21 to 39 inches, to about age 3 [6].
The positions differ more than the numbers suggest.
- Facing in: both, from 7 lb with no insert [6][7].
- Facing out: BabyBjörn says around 5 months, when the baby's neck muscles can hold the head up unaided [6]. Ergobaby says the baby needs strong head and neck control, must be taller than 25 inches (around 5 to 6 months), and recommends a minimum of 14 lb and a maximum of 30 lb for this position [7].
- Hip carry: Ergobaby only. It lists a baby who sits upright unassisted and weighs at least 17.2 lb, usually around 6 months [7].
- Back carry: both. BabyBjörn says to wait until the baby has turned one, because you can't supervise as closely [6]. Ergobaby lists back carry for a baby who sits unassisted, usually around 6 months [7].
Follow the manual over any general age. Babies reach these milestones at different times.
Which fits a newborn?
Both makers say a baby of 7 lb or more fits without an insert [6][7]. BabyBjörn says the Harmony has one height position for newborns and one for older babies, plus adjustable head support in three positions [6]. Ergobaby says that for a baby 6 weeks and under, you fold the head and neck support in and button it to the lower buttons, and that the top edge of the carrier should sit at mid-ear level [7].
The AAP says to keep your baby's neck straight, chin off the chest, and always be able to see their face. Babies born early or with breathing problems shouldn't be put in upright carriers without asking your pediatrician [5]. The AAP also cites the CPSC's warning about suffocation risk in slings, particularly for babies younger than 4 months [5].
What about hip-healthy claims?
BabyBjörn's page says the Harmony is "acknowledged as hip healthy" by the IHDI [6]. Ergobaby's Omni Deluxe doesn't make that claim on the page we checked, but the IHDI lists the Omni Deluxe, Omni Classic and Embrace among Ergobaby products on its partner page [3]. BabyBjörn's Harmony, Mini, One and Free/Move are also listed [3].
The IHDI itself is careful about what that means. It says it isn't a certifying body and has never performed safety testing, that it acknowledges companies whose mission aligns with its own, and that "no baby carrier can cause or prevent hip dysplasia" [3]. For babies under 6 months, it advises a wide-base carrier that supports the thighs to the knees, citing a 2023 study that found hips sat more fully in the socket in wide-base carriers than narrow-base ones [4]. It also says there's no evidence narrow-base carriers cause hip dysplasia [4].
So treat "hip healthy" as a brand's alignment with IHDI guidance, not as a tested result. The IHDI says tight swaddling and restricting hip motion can cause dysplasia [3]. Ask your pediatrician if your baby has hip concerns.
What federal rules apply?
Every soft infant and toddler carrier sold in the U.S. must meet 16 CFR 1226, which incorporates ASTM F2236 [1][2]. Slings and wraps are covered by a separate rule, 16 CFR 1228 [2]. The rule applies to every brand, so a safety standard doesn't separate these two. Check fit, buckles and seams on any carrier, and don't use one with torn fabric or damaged fasteners [5].
Who each one fits
The Harmony may fit if you want a soft, lightweight carrier mainly for the first year or two, and you'll use inward, outward and back positions. The Omni Deluxe may fit if you want a higher weight limit, a hip carry for an older baby, and a lifetime guarantee.

Recalls and safety
We searched the CPSC recall database on October 16, 2026 for BabyBjörn and Ergobaby carriers and found no recall of either brand's carriers [9]. Ergobaby recalled about 2,800 METROUS strollers in 2021 because a harness buckle button could break off [8]. That wasn't a carrier.
Search results change, so check the CPSC recall list before you take a hand-me-down. We list every carrier and sling recall since 2010 on our carrier recalls page.
