Key takeaways
- Your health plan must cover a breast pump, either a rental or one you keep. WIC provides foods, including infant formula, for babies and children up to their fifth birthday.
- Cribs for Kids works through more than 2,000 partner organizations. Many give portable cribs to families who qualify, and all of them teach safe sleep.
- Of the 17 Medicaid health plans in our October 2026 table, 10 offer a car seat, a crib, diapers or money set aside for them, usually for getting a prenatal or postpartum checkup on time.
- HHS launched its NEST newborn kit program on October 9, 2026. Kits go out only through participating hospitals, health centers and local organizations, not by request to HHS.
- Registry welcome boxes at Target and Amazon are retail promotions. Both require a registry with 10 items and over $10 in registry purchases, and Amazon's also requires Prime.
Search "free baby stuff" and you'll get coupon lists and Facebook groups. The things worth real money come from programs that families already qualify for: health insurance, Medicaid, WIC and a network of nonprofit crib, car seat and diaper programs.
This page lists each one, who qualifies and how to ask. It also includes a table we built by reading the member pages of 17 Medicaid health plans in 9 states, because those plan "extras" are the least known and often the most generous.
The short list: free baby stuff from real programs

| Portable crib or play yard | Cribs for Kids partners, health departments, Medicaid plans | Families who can't afford a safe sleep space [6] |
| Car seat | Local car seat programs, Medicaid plans | Varies by program; ask 211 or your plan |
| Diapers | Diaper banks (often through partner agencies), some Medicaid plans | Families in need [8] |
| Newborn and postpartum kit | HHS NEST program, through participating hospitals and clinics | Families served by a participating site [11] |
| Gift cards, baby gear and baby showers | Medicaid health plan "extras" | Plan members who get prenatal or postpartum checkups on time |
| Registry welcome box | Target, Amazon | Anyone who sets up a registry and meets the retailer's terms |
The sections below cover each one. For cribs, car seats and diapers, we have full guides: how to get a free crib, how to get a free car seat and how to get free diapers.
A free breast pump through insurance, Medicaid or WIC
This is the biggest-ticket item most families can get for free. Your health plan must cover a breast pump, either a rental or a new one you keep. The plan can set rules on whether it's manual or electric, how long a rental lasts, and whether it arrives before or after birth [1].
USDA's WIC breastfeeding site lists the low-cost routes: private insurance, Medicaid, your local hospital and some WIC clinics. Some families keep their pump, and some rent one while they breastfeed [2].
How to order, which models are covered and what to say when you call are in our guide to getting a breast pump through insurance. State-by-state Medicaid rules are on our breast pumps by state page.
WIC: food and formula for you and your baby
WIC serves women who are pregnant, postpartum (up to 6 months after a pregnancy ends) or breastfeeding (up to the baby's first birthday), plus infants and children up to their fifth birthday [3]. If you or your children get Medicaid, SNAP or TANF, you may already be income eligible [3].
WIC provides healthy foods on an eWIC card that works like a debit card, along with nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals, all at no cost [4]. Infant formula is on the list of WIC-eligible foods [5]. Income limits and how to apply in your state are on our WIC page.
WIC doesn't cover diapers, wipes or baby gear. The National Diaper Bank Network points out that SNAP and WIC can't be used to buy diapers [9].
Free cribs, car seats and diapers
Cribs. Cribs for Kids works through more than 2,000 partner organizations and says it has given out over 1 million cribs. Its partner locator lists groups near you. All partners teach safe sleep, and many give portable cribs to families who qualify [6]. Details are in our free crib guide.
Car seats. There's no single national giveaway, so free car seats come from local programs and Medicaid plans. Whatever seat you end up with, NHTSA says certified technicians at inspection stations will check it and show you how to install it, free of charge in most cases [7]. See our free car seat guide.
Diapers. Nearly 1 in 2 U.S. families with young children can't afford enough diapers, according to the National Diaper Bank Network's 2026 survey [9]. To find diaper help, NDBN tells families to call 211 or check its member directory [8]. Our free diapers guide covers diaper banks, state programs and TennCare's diaper benefit.
The new HHS NEST newborn kit
On October 9, 2026, HHS launched the Newborn Essentials Support Toolkit (NEST) program, which builds on a newborn supply kit pilot that began in 2023 [10]. Each kit includes diapers and wipes, an infant thermometer, postpartum recovery and breastfeeding supplies, a blood pressure monitor and other newborn essentials, plus health information [10].
You can't order one. HHS says NEST isn't a direct-to-consumer benefit, and it doesn't mail kits to individuals or accept requests from families [11]. Kits go out through hospitals, federally qualified health centers and other organizations that provide maternity care late in pregnancy or around birth, with priority on maternity care deserts, rural communities and other underserved areas [10]. Ask your hospital or clinic whether it takes part.
Medicaid health plan extras by state (October 2026)
Most Medicaid members get their coverage through a private health plan. Many of these plans add "value-added" or "expanded" benefits on top of regular Medicaid. For pregnancy, that often means gift cards for checkups, and sometimes a car seat, a crib or diapers.
We read each plan's own member page or benefits document on October 9, 2026. Plans change these extras every year, and Texas plans' benefit year runs September to August. Confirm with the plan before you count on anything.

A few things stand out:
- Ten of the 17 plans offer a car seat, a crib, diapers or money set aside for them. They're in Texas, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina and Georgia.
- The biggest extras go to people who start prenatal care early. Many require a visit in the first trimester or within 42 days of joining the plan.
- North Carolina's two biggest plans changed this year. Carolina Complete Health and WellCare of North Carolina merged on April 1, 2026, and their extra benefits were combined [24].
- Some big plans offer little or nothing extra. We found no baby items or pregnancy gift cards on the public pages of Fidelis Care or Healthfirst in New York, Keystone First or Highmark Wholecare in Pennsylvania, or Health Net or Inland Empire Health Plan in California. Their regular Medicaid benefits still cover your care.
How to claim plan extras. Call the member services number on your plan ID card and ask, "What extra benefits do you offer for pregnant and new members, and how do I request them?" Fill out your plan's Notification of Pregnancy form if it has one, since several plans tie rewards to it. If you can choose a plan, compare extras at enrollment. Your state's options are on our Medicaid for pregnancy page.
Registry welcome boxes are retail promotions
Retailers give free boxes of samples to get you to build a registry with them. They can be worth having, but they're marketing, not a program, and the terms change.
- Target: Join Target Circle, create a baby registry, add 10 distinct items and have over $10 in registry purchases. The kit is claimed online, Target values it at $100 (a mix of samples and Target Circle bonuses), shipping and handling fees apply, and it's limited to one per year [31].
- Amazon: You need an active Prime membership, a baby registry with 10 unique items and over $10 in purchases from it [32].
We don't earn anything from these retailers, and nothing on this page is an affiliate link.
How to find what's available near you
Most of this help is local, so the fastest route is often a phone call:
- Call or text 211. 211 connects you with local resources for basic needs, 24/7, and calls are confidential [33]. Ask specifically about cribs, car seats and diapers.
- Ask at your WIC appointment. WIC staff make referrals to other services [4].
- Ask your Medicaid plan about the extras in the table above.
- Ask the hospital where you plan to deliver whether it has a car seat program or takes part in NEST.

Questions people ask
How can I get free baby stuff?
Start with programs: ask your insurer or Medicaid plan for a breast pump, apply for WIC, and call 211 or check the Cribs for Kids and National Diaper Bank Network locators for cribs and diapers. If you're on Medicaid, ask your health plan which pregnancy extras it offers.
What free stuff can I get when pregnant?
During pregnancy you can apply for WIC, order a breast pump through your plan (many plans ship before birth), and request a car seat or crib from your Medicaid plan if it offers one. Many plan extras require a prenatal visit in your first trimester, so call early.
Does Medicaid give free car seats?
Medicaid itself doesn't, but many Medicaid health plans do as an extra benefit. In our October 2026 check, plans in Texas, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina and Georgia offered a car seat or a gift card toward one, usually after a prenatal visit.
Does WIC give free diapers?
No. WIC provides specific foods, including infant formula, plus nutrition education and breastfeeding support. The National Diaper Bank Network notes that SNAP and WIC can't be used to buy diapers, so look to diaper banks instead.
Are baby registry welcome boxes really free?
The box is free, but you have to qualify. Target and Amazon both require a registry with 10 items and over $10 in purchases from it. Amazon also requires a Prime membership, and Target charges shipping.
