Short answer

Four big registries give a welcome box, and none is truly no-strings. Amazon needs Prime, 10 registry items and over $10 in registry purchases. Target needs 10 items and over $10 in purchases, plus shipping and handling. Walmart's terms ask for 20 items and over $25. Babylist charges $8.95 shipping. Each also has a separate 15% completion discount with its own dates.

Four big registries give new parents a free welcome box: Amazon, Target, Walmart and Babylist. None is truly no-strings. Each asks you to build a registry and spend a set amount through it, and two charge shipping. The table shows the rules side by side, as each store published them on October 16, 2026.

Walmart's pages block automated readers, so its box terms come from the text of its help article and terms of use as shown in search results [6][11]. We couldn't confirm a Walmart completion discount or return window from Walmart's own pages. Babylist's pages also disagree with each other on its box requirements, which is why that column says to confirm at checkout.

Not covered: buybuy BABY. We found no current retailer terms for a welcome box or completion discount from the relaunched chain, so we left it out. Check its registry page directly.

How to get each box

Amazon

  1. Create an Amazon baby registry Affiliate link while signed in to an account with active Prime.
  2. Add 10 unique items from the Baby Registry Checklist.
  3. Get over $10 in purchases from the registry. You can buy them, or gift givers can. The $10 excludes tax and shipping, and Prime or gift card purchases don't count. Amazon counts the threshold as met when the items ship [1].
  4. Log in as the primary registry owner and redeem the offer. Co-registrants can't claim it [1].

The full terms are on Amazon's welcome box page Affiliate link. The offer is limited-time and "while supplies last" [1].

Target

  1. Create a Target baby registry. Target Circle membership is required [3].
  2. Accept the Welcome Kit bonus when it appears on your Target Circle deal list.
  3. Add 10 unique items and buy over $10 from the registry, by you or by others.
  4. Wait 24 to 48 hours. The bonus shows on your registry dashboard [3].

Registries that already claimed a previous kit aren't eligible, and registries created before August 15, 2023 don't qualify [3].

Walmart

Per Walmart's help article, a registry created on or after February 1, 2025 must stay open at least 7 days, hold 20 unique items (multiples of one item don't count) and have over $25 bought through your registry link. Items you mark "purchased" by hand don't count. When you qualify, a Redeem option appears under My Registry [6]. You must be 18 or older and live in the 50 states or Puerto Rico, and boxes go out while supplies last [6].

Babylist

Claim the box in the Babylist app or on the web from your home dashboard, then pay the shipping fee. The fee is $8.95 [7]. Babylist's help center lists extra steps: confirm your name, arrival date and U.S. address in Settings, add three items from other stores, complete 40% of your checklist and buy $30 from the Babylist Shop. That purchase can be a gift from your registry [9].

How to time your registry

Two clocks run at once: the box rules, and the completion discount window. Your arrival date sets the second one, so enter it when you create the registry.

Store Registry must be active Discount opens Discount ends
Amazon 14 days 60 days before arrival date 90 days after [2]
Target 14 days Coupon sent 8 weeks before arrival date 6 months after the coupon is issued [4]
Babylist 30 days 60 days before arrival date 90 days after [8]

Practical timing:

  • Start in the second trimester. The box needs gift givers or your own purchases, and Walmart's box can take 10 to 12 weeks to arrive [6].
  • Save big items for the window. Amazon's 15% covers orders up to $2,000, and Babylist's up to $4,000. Both have caps [2][8].
  • Don't count on stacking. Amazon says the completion discount can't combine with other offers such as Lightning Deals. It also isn't refunded if you return an item bought with it [2].
  • Order matters at Amazon. Select the promotional balance at checkout or the discount isn't applied [2].

Our baby registry checklist shows what to put on the registry once you've picked a store.

Which registry should you start first

There's no single answer. The honest tradeoffs:

  • You already pay for Prime. Amazon's box costs nothing more, and its registry gift returns run 365 days from receipt [1][10].
  • You live near a Target. Returns can go through a store with a barcode from your registry, but a minimum registry spend is required [5].
  • You want items from many stores in one list. Babylist holds items from other stores, but its discount applies only to its own shop [8].
  • You want the lowest hurdle. Amazon and Target ask for the same 10 items and over $10 [1][3]. Walmart's published bar is higher: 20 items and over $25 [6].
  • You want a no-fee box. Target and Babylist charge shipping [3][7].

You can open more than one registry. Each store's box limit applies per store, so claiming one doesn't block another. Just avoid buying duplicates, which is the main cost of running two lists.

What the boxes are worth

Stores call the boxes valuable, with Target's kit valued at $100 and Babylist's described as about $100 [3][7]. Those are the stores' own figures and include coupons and gift cards. Samples are small, brand choices vary and a gift card for formula only helps if you use that brand.

Treat a box as a small bonus to a registry you'd build anyway. Don't buy items you don't need to hit a threshold. For diapers and formula help that doesn't depend on a purchase, see our guide to free diapers and the WIC benefit.

Questions people ask

How do I get the Amazon baby registry welcome box?

You need an active Prime account, a baby registry with 10 unique items from the Baby Registry Checklist, and over $10 in registry purchases, made by you or by others. The primary registry owner claims it while logged in, and you can't claim another for 8 months [1].

Is the Target baby registry welcome kit really free?

The kit has a stated value of $100, but shipping and handling fees apply. To get it, you join Target Circle, create a registry, add 10 unique items and buy over $10 from the registry. Then allow 24 to 48 hours for the bonus to appear [3].

Does Walmart have a baby registry welcome box?

Yes. Per Walmart's help article, registries created on or after February 1, 2025 qualify once they've been open at least 7 days, hold 20 unique items and have over $25 in purchases through the registry link. Walmart says to allow 10 to 12 weeks for delivery [6].

Does Babylist have a welcome box?

Yes, the Hello Baby Box. Babylist lists samples from more than 25 brands and charges $8.95 for shipping [7]. Its help center also lists a $30 Babylist Shop purchase and a 40% checklist as conditions, so confirm in your account [9].

Can I get more than one welcome box?

Not at the same store in a short span. Amazon blocks a second box for 8 months, Target limits you to one kit per year, and Walmart limits one per person or address per 365 days [1][3][6]. You can claim from different stores.

When does the registry completion discount start?

At Amazon it starts 60 days before your arrival date and ends 90 days after it. Target sends a coupon 8 weeks before. Babylist applies its discount from 60 days before to 90 days after [2][4][8]. Set your arrival date on the registry or the clock won't start.
