Short answer

For most families, a compact swing like the Ingenuity SimpleComfort or ConvertMe covers the 0 to 9 month window and a bouncer like the BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss is the no-power alternative, but a swing is for a calm, awake baby, and the AAP says to move a baby who falls asleep in one to a firm, flat surface. Every swing sold in the US must meet 16 CFR 1223.

Key takeaways

  • Swings, bouncers and rockers are not for sleep. If your baby falls asleep in one, move them to a firm, flat surface on their back [1].
  • Infant swings must meet 16 CFR 1223 (ASTM F2088-25) and bouncer seats must meet 16 CFR 1229 (ASTM F2167-22) [2][3].
  • CPSC's rule for infant rockers was only proposed, in October 2023. We found no final rule in the federal regulations as of October 16, 2026 [4].
  • Recalls to know: Fisher-Price Snuga swings (2.1 million, 5 deaths, 2024) and 4moms MamaRoo 3-point-harness models (about 2 million, 1 death, 2022) [5][6].
  • Most swings here cap at 9 months or 20 pounds. Stop using one when your baby reaches the limit or tries to climb out.

A baby swing is a spot for a calm, awake baby, not for sleep. The AAP says that if a baby falls asleep in a swing, you should move them to a firm sleep surface on their back as soon as possible [1][14]. With that rule in mind, these picks are sorted by use, not ranked.

Quick picks:

  • Most features: Ingenuity InLighten Bounce and Sway
  • Compact and quiet: Ingenuity SimpleComfort Compact
  • Portable, converts to a seat: Ingenuity ConvertMe 2-in-1

Safe sleep first

Don't buy a swing to help your baby nap. The AAP's 2022 policy says swings and other sitting devices aren't recommended for routine sleep, especially under 4 months, and to move a baby who falls asleep in one to a crib or other flat surface as soon as is safe and practical [14]. The AAP also says to put babies to sleep on their backs, alone, on a firm, flat surface, and that a sleep surface inclined more than 10 degrees isn't safe [1]. CPSC's infant sleep product rule uses the same 10-degree limit [15].

CPSC's Snuga swing recall says the same thing in plain words: the swings should never be used for sleep, and bedding should never be added [5]. If your baby dozes off in a swing, a bouncer or a car seat, lift them to a crib or bassinet. You can read more in our crib vs bassinet guide.

The picks, by use

Recall status comes from CPSC searches on October 16, 2026. Recalls can be added at any time, so check yours on the CPSC recall page after you buy [16].

Most features: Ingenuity InLighten Bounce and Sway

Ingenuity's 3-in-1 swing sways side to side, can be bounced by a parent, and locks into a stationary seat [12]. It has six speeds, three timer settings, vibration, Bluetooth audio and 14 preloaded melodies, with a 5-point harness. It's for ages 0 to 9 months and includes an AC adaptor [12].

Recall check: We found no CPSC recall for this model or other Ingenuity swings.

Not for: Small apartments. It's the biggest swing here, at about 27.6 inches tall, 26.6 wide and 29.9 long [12].

Compact and quiet: Ingenuity SimpleComfort Compact Soothing Swing

The seat turns 180 degrees and swings in three directions, with six speeds, a timer and auto shut-off [7]. It's rated for 0 to 9 months or up to 20 pounds, whichever comes first, with a 5-point harness, and it runs on a USB cord, so you don't need batteries [7].

Recall check: We found no CPSC recall for the SimpleComfort or other Ingenuity swings.

Not for: Travel. It's compact for a plug-in swing, but it isn't a fold-up swing like the ConvertMe or Whimsical Wild.

Portable, converts to a seat: Ingenuity ConvertMe 2-in-1

The ConvertMe is a swing with five settings that locks into a stationary seat, and it folds flat for storage and travel [8]. Ingenuity lists it for 0 to 9 months or up to 20 pounds, with a 5-point harness, a USB-powered swing and a 1 C battery for vibration [8]. Assembled, it's about 25.6 by 21.5 by 31.1 inches [8].

Recall check: We found no CPSC recall for the ConvertMe.

Not for: Anyone who wants an app or a bigger seat. It keeps the feature list short.

Smaller budget, small spaces: Bright Starts Whimsical Wild

This foldable portable swing uses six speeds with weight-sensing speed control and 10 melodies, and it has an adjustable 5-point harness and two recline positions [13]. It's for ages 0 to 9 months, runs on four C batteries that aren't included, and is about 26.8 inches tall and 22.6 wide [13].

Recall check: We found no CPSC recall for this swing. Kids2's 2023 re-announced recall (23-089) covered rocking sleepers, a different product [16].

Not for: Anyone who doesn't want to buy batteries. The swing needs four C cells [13].

Smart swing with an app: Mamaroo Smart Swing

UPPAbaby sells the Mamaroo, now with five motions, five speeds and four sounds, controlled through a Bluetooth app, Alexa or Google Home [11]. It's rated from birth to 25 pounds or 9 months, whichever comes first, and the maker says to stop when baby tries to climb out [11]. It has a no-rethread harness, and it reclines from 25 to 45 degrees [11].

Recall check: 4moms' 2022 recall (22-200) covered about 2 million older MamaRoo swings and RockaRoo rockers with 3-point harnesses, after a 10-month-old died in a strap hanging below an empty seat. MamaRoo models with a 5-point harness were not recalled [6]. If you buy used, check the model number against that recall.

Not for: A tight budget, or anyone who wants a plug-in only swing. It's the most feature-rich pick here.

No-power alternative: BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss

A bouncer has no motor. It moves with your baby's own motion. Bouncer Bliss is rated for 8 to 29 pounds, with a 20-pound limit in bouncer mode, then turns into a toddler chair [10]. BabyBjorn says it complies with ASTM F2167, the standard behind 16 CFR 1229 [3][10]. It folds flat.

Recall check: We found no CPSC recall for the Bouncer Bliss. CPSC's 2019 recall of Stokke Infant Steps bouncers covered a different product [16].

Not for: Parents who want hands-free motion. It only moves when your baby does.

How to choose a baby swing

Match the limits. Most swings here stop at 9 months or 20 pounds. The Mamaroo allows 25 pounds, and the Bouncer Bliss runs to 29 pounds [7][8][10][11].

Choose a power source. USB and AC models save batteries. The ConvertMe and Whimsical Wild need batteries, in different amounts [8][13].

Check the footprint. Measure the room. The InLighten is the biggest, and the ConvertMe and Whimsical Wild fold [8][12][13].

Use the harness every time. Buckle your baby in, even when you're standing next to the swing, and keep it on the floor.

Recalls and rules to know

Federal rules. Swings follow 16 CFR 1223, which makes ASTM F2088-25 mandatory, and bouncer seats follow 16 CFR 1229, based on ASTM F2167-22 [2][3]. CPSC proposed a standard for infant rockers in October 2023, and we found no final rule in the federal regulations as of October 16, 2026 [4].

Fisher-Price Snuga swings (2024). About 2.1 million were recalled after five infants aged 1 to 3 months died between 2012 and 2022, mostly unrestrained with bedding added [5].

Fisher-Price Rock 'n Glide soothers (2021). Four infants died. CPSC told owners to stop using the products [9].

MamaRoo and RockaRoo (2022). The strap on older 3-point-harness models could strangle a crawling baby [6].

Questions people ask

Can a baby sleep in a swing?

No. The AAP says that if a baby falls asleep in a swing, car seat, stroller or carrier, you should move them to a firm sleep surface on their back as soon as possible [1]. CPSC's Snuga swing recall also says swings should never be used for sleep and bedding should never be added [5].

How long can a baby use a swing?

The picks here are made for roughly birth to 9 months. The Ingenuity swings are rated for 0 to 9 months or up to 20 pounds, whichever comes first, and the Mamaroo is rated to 25 pounds or 9 months [7][8][11]. Stop earlier if your baby tries to climb out.

What safety standard do baby swings follow?

16 CFR 1223, the CPSC safety standard for infant and cradle swings, which makes ASTM F2088-25 mandatory [2]. Bouncer seats have their own rule, 16 CFR 1229, based on ASTM F2167-22 [3].

Are baby rockers and bouncers safe?

Used awake and buckled, on a flat floor, and never as a sleep spot. CPSC proposed a rocker standard in 2023, and several rocker and sleeper products were recalled after infant deaths, so check any product against recalls [4][9].

Which is better, a swing or a bouncer?

A swing moves for you on power. A bouncer has no motor and moves with your baby's own motion. BabyBjorn's Bouncer Bliss runs from 8 to 29 pounds and doubles as a toddler chair, while the swings here stop at 9 months [10].
