Key takeaways

  • Nanit debuted the Pro in February 2021 as an upgraded model at $299, versus $249 for the Plus. TechCrunch reported it increased the camera's resolution and improved the built-in night light and overall usability.
  • Nanit's current monitor shop lists one camera, the Smart Baby Monitor System, which is the camera Nanit used to call the Pro. We found no Plus there.
  • A paid Insights plan isn't required. Nanit's plans run $100 (Sleep, after a 3-month free trial), $120 (Memories) and $300 (Milestones) a year, and sleep analysis needs the floor stand or wall mount.
  • Nanit's help center says it isn't a medical device. The AAP says not to use home cardiorespiratory monitors as a strategy to reduce SIDS risk.
  • We found no CPSC recall of a Nanit camera in our October 16, 2026 search.

If you're comparing the Nanit Pro and the Nanit Plus, here is the short version: the Pro is the newer camera, and it's the one Nanit sells now. The Plus came first. Nanit debuted the Pro in February 2021 as an upgrade, and it no longer shows the Plus in its monitor shop.

That means this comparison matters mostly if you're offered a used Plus, inherited one, or see an old listing. This page lines them up from Nanit's own pages and the launch coverage. We research products; we don't test them, and we don't list retail prices. For other monitor types, see our baby monitor guide.

What changed when the Pro replaced the Plus?

Less than the names suggest. TechCrunch's February 2021 report says the Pro was "an upgraded model ($299 versus $249 for the Nanit Plus)" that "increases the camera's resolution while improving things like the built-in night light and overall usability" [1].

It gives no resolution figures, and we couldn't find them on Nanit's current pages. Third-party sites quote different numbers, so we haven't repeated any. If resolution matters to you, check the exact listing or the box.

Which one does Nanit sell now?

Nanit's monitor shop lists the Smart Baby Monitor System, a camera with a floor stand or wall mount and an optional 8-inch display, plus bundles and a Flex Stand set [6]. That's the camera Nanit used to sell as the Pro. The same page doesn't list a Plus [6].

Nanit's help center still names the Nanit Plus, so existing owners aren't cut off. For example, it says Smart Sheets work with the original Nanit, the Nanit Plus and the Nanit Pro [4]. Support articles aren't a promise of future updates, so ask Nanit about support for older cameras if you're buying one used.

Do you need a subscription?

No. Nanit says its current monitor works without an Insights plan for live streaming, real-time sound and motion notifications, two-way audio, temperature and humidity tracking, white noise, a night light and up to two users [2][3]. Breathing Motion Monitoring also works without a plan when your baby wears Nanit's patterned Breathing Wear [2][5].

A plan adds sleep analysis, smart notifications such as cry detection, longer video history and more users [5].

Insights plan Fee (billed yearly) What the plan adds
Sleep 3 months free, then under $10 a month; $100 a year per a Nanit blog post Live video only, 2 caregiver accounts, 2 days of sleep analysis [3][5]
Memories $120 a year 2 days of video history, 10 caregiver profiles, 30 days of sleep analysis, unlimited memories [3]
Milestones $300 a year 7 days of video history, unlimited caregiver profiles and sleep analysis, milestone detection [3][5]

A floor stand or wall mount is required for sleep analysis, milestone detection and time-lapse videos [3]. The Flex Stand gives a 130-degree view, not a full overhead one, and sleep tracking doesn't work on it [2]. Nanit's pages disagree on the Sleep plan price, so check the plan page at checkout.

What does the AAP say about monitors like this?

The AAP's 2022 policy says not to use home cardiorespiratory monitors as a strategy to reduce the risk of SIDS [7]. Nanit says in its help center that it isn't a medical device [4]. A camera lets you watch your baby, but it doesn't change the safe sleep steps: on the back, on a firm, flat surface, in your room, with nothing else in the sleep space [7].

Who each one fits

The current Nanit camera may fit if you're buying new, want a warranty and can mount it overhead. A used Nanit Plus may fit if it comes with its mount and you only want a WiFi camera with an app, and the price makes sense. Either way, the camera needs WiFi and the Nanit app, so a no-WiFi monitor from our baby monitor guide is the alternative.

See our baby registry checklist for what else to add before the baby arrives.

Recalls and safety

We searched the CPSC recall database on October 16, 2026 for Nanit and found no recall of a Nanit camera [8]. Search results change, so check the CPSC recall list before you buy secondhand. Keep cords out of baby's reach, mount the camera as Nanit instructs, and don't put it inside the crib.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Nanit and Nanit Plus?

The Nanit Plus is the earlier generation, and the Nanit Pro replaced it in 2021 with a higher-resolution camera, an improved night light and better usability [1]. Nanit's help center lists three cameras: the original Nanit, the Nanit Plus and the Nanit Pro [4]. Today Nanit sells the Pro as the Smart Baby Monitor System [2].

What is the difference between Nanit Pro and Nanit Plus?

At launch the Pro cost $299 and the Plus $249, and the Pro improved the camera's resolution, night light and usability [1]. Third-party sources disagree on exact resolutions, and Nanit's current page doesn't state one [2], so check the listing for the unit you're buying. Nanit's help center says its Smart Sheets work with the original Nanit, the Plus and the Pro [4].

Does Nanit Pro need a subscription?

No. Nanit says live streaming, real-time sound and motion notifications, two-way audio, temperature and humidity tracking and white noise work without an Insights plan [2]. Sleep tracking, milestones and longer video history need an Insights plan, and a floor stand or wall mount [3].

How much do Nanit Insights plans cost?

Nanit lists the Sleep plan free for 3 months and then under $10 a month, billed yearly, Memories at $120 a year and Milestones at $300 a year [3]. A Nanit blog post lists Sleep at $100 a year after the trial [5]. All plans are billed annually, and fees change, so check Nanit's plan page.

Can you use a Nanit Plus today?

Yes, if you have one. Nanit's help center still has articles that name the Nanit Plus [4]. We found it no longer listed in Nanit's monitor shop [6], so a used or refurbished unit won't come with Nanit's current warranty unless Nanit says so.

Does Nanit reduce the risk of SIDS?

No monitor has been shown to. Nanit says it isn't a medical device [4], and the AAP says not to use home cardiorespiratory monitors as a strategy to reduce SIDS risk [7]. Back sleeping on a firm, flat surface in your room is the plan either way.
